AAP failing to deliver on its promises with the recent surge in water tariff

NEW DELHI: Once again, the Arvind Kejriwal led Delhi government has faltered on its promises which were made during their election campaign. Initially, the government set a cap of 20,000 litres per month usage for every household and beyond which the extra usage was made chargeable, according to their consumption.

And now in yet another move, Delhi Jal Board (DJB) hiked the water tariff and sewer usage by 20 per cent for consumers exceeding their monthly quota of 20,000 litres. This hike is supposed to replace the existing tariffs of 10 per cent, which was set in 2015 by the AAP government. The hike of 10 per cent was a part of 10% rate hike mechanism been exercised by the Sheila Dikshit government. Though, Delhi government discontinued the auto hike mechanism last year only.

The hike in water tariff has come only after the Chief Minister took over the department of water three months back. Before him, Kapil Sharma was looking after it. DJB defended its move by saying that the change in tariff will take up some financial burden from the water body. According to media sources, the new increased tariff will be followed by February 2018.

Delhi government spokesperson Nagendar Sharma also tweeted the change in the water tariff.

Interestingly, the increase of water tariff has come days after AAP was exposed of its Free Surgery Scheme when some doctors of reputed hospitals were caught demanding money during the sting operation conducted by Dainik Bhaskar.

So, all these incidents call for self-retrospection of party agenda that were being boasted during election campaigns by the party head, Arvind Kejriwal.
