Indore-Patna Express Derails near Kanpur: Over 100 Killed, nearly 200 Injured

November 20, 2016: The Indore-Patna Express derailed near Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh killing more than 100 people and injuring nearly 200 people on Sunday morning.

• Fourteen coaches of the Indore-Patna Express rolled off the track a little, around 3 am in Pukhraya that is 100 km from Kanpur. The train carrying more than 500 passengers were mostly sleeping at that point of time.

• Passengers heard a bang, they were jolted awake and were thrown around. "We heard a deafening noise…I am lucky to be alive and safe," a passenger said, according to a report.

• "There must be a fault in the track as 14 bogeys have derailed and this happened despite regular checking of the tracks," said the Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha.

• "More bodies were pulled out from the two coaches that fell on the side," said Daljeet Singh Choudhary, a senior police officer.

• Hours after the accident, a team of army personnel, doctors joined along with 250 rescue workers.

• Many of the survivors were moved to a nearby town so that they can leave via trains or buses.

• As the rescuers have not been able to access one of the coaches, it is feared that the number of deaths may rise.

• Rs 3.5 lakh exgratia will be given for the families of those killed in the derailment and Rs 50,000 for those grievously injured, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said.

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was "anguished beyond words" and also said that he had spoken to Suresh Prabhu who was monitoring the case closely.
