JNU turmoil: Journalists stage protest over attack at Patiala House Court

New Delhi: Journalists belonging to the capital staged a protest march on Tuesday, against the violence that took place in Patiala House Court a day before, regarding the turmoil going on in JNU, where some of them along with many students were beaten up.

Yesterday, teachers and students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and journalists were attacked and threatened in a Delhi court today as dozens of policemen watched. The violence erupted just before a JNU student arrested for sedition was to be produced before a magistrate.

"Seven faculty members including five women were manhandled and pushed in court," said JNU professor Ayesha Kidwai, who was among those allegedly attacked. "The murderous mob was baying for blood and the cops just stood and watched. The attackers were men in lawyers' clothes but they were clearly on the wrong side of the law," she alleged.

The march which commenced from Press Club of India near the Parliament House will go up to the Supreme Court as scheduled.

A group of lawyers assaulted some journalists and Jawaharlal Nehru University students at the Patiala Court. Kanhaiya Kumar, the JNU Student Union president was to be present at the Court.

The journalists are demanding the arrest of lawyers who beat the reporters and students within the court complex and also action against the police personnel who merely stood as spectators to the incident.(Inputs from Agencies)
