New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed passed away on Thursday morning at 7.15 AM in AIIMS hospital.

Sayeed, a political stalwart from the valley was hospitalised for the last two weeks. His party PDP came into power after winning the 2015 assembly elections with BJP.

Tributes poured in from all the political quarters and leaders.

His daughter Mehbooba Mufti is fated to be his successor. This would also make her the first woman Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

He was five days shy of his 80th birthday. This was his second Chief Ministerial tenure. He was also India's first Muslim Home Minister when he became one during VP government in 1989.

Mufti Mohammed Sayeed in his life faced a lot of attacks from separatists and militants. His coalition with BJP also triggered controversies as he had earlier expressed solidarity with the Congress.
