Delhi marks second car free day and start of ‘Swachh’ campaign

New Delhi: Delhi is observing its second car free day on Sunday, November 22. It is being organized between Dwarka sector 3-13 and 7-9 from 8 AM to 4 PM.

On October 22^nd, Delhi had its first car-free day and it had successful results as there was 60 per cent decline in Delhi's pollution.

The other positive was less traffic. People waste so much of time in traffic which is the extra burden on a working person, especially as the traveling time is not counted anywhere.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal urged people to be a part of the initiative on Twitter. He also declared that next month car free day will be observed in east Delhi areas and on 22^nd January, whole Delhi will have car free day.

Today will also mark the start of 'Swachh Delhi' campaign. Its mobile app had received 1500 complaints by the morning.

The app was launched to receive complaints. Delhi will have intense cleanliness campaign from 22^nd to 30^th November. All a user has to do is upload the picture of garbage wherever he sees and the government will take action.

The pollution in Delhi has been a huge problem and with it, comes the rise of many diseases. The city has been reported as one of the most polluted in the world.

The traffic also is an issue, as traveling in Delhi takes up so much of time even though millions are commuting through the metro.

The number of cars parked in any residential area tells the story. Half of the area of the roads is blocked by the parked cars.

With population increasing all the time, it is natural that personal vehicles would increase. However, there are people who possess way more automobiles than they need. It is also the mark of a high class citizen, and the desire to be at higher social status is one reason for rising number of vehicles.

There has been a push to encourage people for carpooling. While, the concerns regarding environment are the priority, but the saved time is the big bonus.

Climate change has been a big topic in the world. Every little effort makes an important difference and the initiative of the car-free day and Swachh Delhi are good steps from Delhi government. All that is required now is that support from the citizen.

Another requirement is a follow-up from the government. It should not happen that for these 10 days the government shows immense pro-activeness and results are seen, but soon after that, things start running in their old ways again. If a plan is initiated then it should be completely taken care of.
