New Delhi: Gujarat violence over demands of reservations was shocking and has pained the entire nation, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Describing the widespread disturbances as "hinsa ke thandav" (dance of death), he said in his Maan Ki Baat radio address that it was but natural for the country to be shocked and anguished if anything like this were to happen in the land of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel.

He said peace was now again prevailing in the state.

Large-scale violence enveloped Gujarat during protests by the Patel community demanding inclusion in OBC list and also reservations in education and job sector.
