California, October 5, 2017: We have all been suggested to have a cup or two of green tea every day for its multiple health benefits. But are you a tea-lover, who prefers to have black tea over green tea?

Health benefits of black tea are many. Perfectly brewed black tea benefits for skin and hair are also known to many.

"For black tea lovers, there may be a new reason to keep drinking it," said Dr Zhaoping Li, a senior author of a new study which points out the positive impact of black tea on the energy metabolism of the body.

The animal study has been carried out by a team of researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and has been published in the European Journal of Nutrition.

As part of the research procedure, mice were given black or green tea along with their diet. Consequently, the intestinal bacteria in mice were observed to measure the effect.

The Research

After four weeks, the weights of the mice that were given green or black tea extracts dropped to the same levels as the mice receiving a low-fat diet.

The mice were divided into four groups with different diets,

  • Low-fat and high-sugar
  • High-fat and high-sugar
  • High-fat and high-sugar supplemented with green tea extracts
  • High-fat and high-sugar supplemented with black tea extracts

Observation

The researchers observed that consumption of tea altered the ratio of bacteria in the mice, showing a decrease in the percentage of bacteria causing obesity and an increase in bacteria that are associated with lean body mass.

Surprisingly, only the mice with black tea extracts diet revealed an increase in a category of gut bacteria called pseudobutyrivibrio which possibly causes the difference in the effects of black and green tea in energy metabolism.

Conclusion

According to researchers, green tea molecules are smaller in size and exercise direct impact on the liver to alter metabolism due to easier absorption.

However, the molecules in black tea are relatively bigger in size, which impede their absorption. Thus, they remain in the intestine, where they promote the development of beneficial bacteria that are involved in the regulation of energy metabolism.

According to the new study, black tea may also contribute to good health. Pixabay

It is a well-known fact that green tea, rich in polyphenols, has multiple health benefits that include weight loss, healthy skin, and developing immunity, among others. However, according to Susanne Henning, lead author of the study, black tea may also contribute to good health and weight loss. She believes, "The results suggest that both black and green teas are prebiotics, substances that induce the growth of good microorganisms that contribute to a person's well-being."

Dr Zhaoping Li shared that the health benefits of black tea and green tea are not only limited to their antioxidant qualities. Instead, they also exercise a significantly positive impact on the gut microbiome.
