NIA Raids Premises of Islamic Preacher Zakir Naik’s Islamic Research Foundation in Mumbai

Mumbai, November 19, 2016: The National Investigation Agency (NIA), along with Mumbai Police, on Saturday carried out raids at 10 places in a case registered against controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik's Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) in Mumbai.

The NIA had registered a case on Friday against Zakir Naik and others under 10,13,18 of UAPA and section 153A of IPC.

The search operations are still under way at IRF premises.

The Union cabinet approved a proposal on November 15 to outlaw the IRF for its alleged terror activities.

Islamic Research Foundation came on the radar of investigative agencies after Dhaka Terror attack, in July. One of the terrorists involved in the attack had allegedly posted on social media that they had been inspired by Naik's preaching.

The controversial preacher, Zakir Naik is out of country and extended his stay abroad after the allegations.

According to TOI report, in a gazette notification, the home ministry had said, "The IRF and its members, specially, the founder and its president Zakir Naik, has been encouraging and aiding its followers to promote or attempt to promote, on grounds of religion, disharmony or feelings of enmity, hatred or ill-will between different religious."

"Youths from Malavani in western suburbs who had left their home to join Islamic State earlier this year were also allegedly inspired by the preaching of the televangelist."

Police had arrested some of the members of IRF for allegedly motivating and inspiring youths from Kasargod in Kerala to join ISIS. National Investigation Agency (NIA) is further investigating the case.
